Messenger is team chat built into Karitm itself — no external tool needed. What sets it apart from an ordinary messenger is that it sits right next to your actual work: you can send an invoice, a document, or a task into a conversation, turn a message into a task, and the other person opens that same document with a single click.
Everything sent here stays inside the organization and, like the rest of Karitm, is subject to permissions: someone who isn't allowed to view an invoice still can't see it, even if they receive a link to it.
Page Layout
The page has two columns: the right column is the conversation list, the left column is the open chat window.
At the top of the list column are three buttons — new chat, bookmarked, and filter — and below them a search box and filter chips: "All · Unread · Direct · Group." Each row shows an avatar, a name, a preview of the last message, the time, and an unread-message-count badge.
Messages arrive in real time; you don't need to refresh the page to see a new one. If the live connection drops, the page itself tells you, and once it reconnects it fetches whatever you missed.
Three Kinds of Conversations
| Type | What it's for | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | A two-person conversation | Only those two people |
| Group | Several specific people, with no formal structure | Group members |
| Channel | A persistent topic (e.g. "Warehouse" or "Support") | Channel members |
A channel has a name and a topic, and can be made read-only: in that mode, only channel admins can post and everyone else can only read — suited to an announcements channel.
"My Space" is a single-person conversation just for you. Anything you send there is visible only to you — a good place for notes and for keeping a file you'll need later.
Composing and Sending a Message
The compose box sits at the bottom of the window, and its placeholder says exactly that: "Write your message… type @ to mention someone and # to reference a task."
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Send | Enter |
| New line | Shift+Enter |
| Mention someone | Type @ and pick from the list that opens |
| Reference a task | Type # and pick the task |
| Emoji | The emoji button next to the box |
| Code snippet | Wrap the text in three ` marks |
Message text accepts simple formatting, and links are detected automatically. If a link's displayed text doesn't match its actual address, Karitm warns you: "This link's actual address doesn't match its displayed text — make sure before opening it."
Files, Documents, and Tasks in a Conversation
Three different things can be sent into a conversation, and each gets its own card:
- File — via the attach button, or by dragging and dropping a file onto the chat window. An image is displayed right in the conversation and enlarges on click (with zoom and rotate).
- Document — a sales invoice, purchase invoice, or accounting voucher. Its card shows the number, date, amount, and counterparty, with a "View Document" button.
- Task — a reference to a project-management task. Its card shows the title and status, and opens with "View Task."
You can also create a task from any message: click "Convert to Task" from that message's menu and fill in the project, title, assignee, and due date. The resulting task stays linked to that message, and its card is headed "Task created from this conversation."
You can't drag and drop a folder; select files individually instead. The attachment space quota is shown above the chat window.
What You Can Do to a Message
Hovering over a message (or using the three-dot menu) gives you access to these actions:
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Reply | A threaded reply beneath that message, without disrupting the conversation |
| Forward | Send that same message to another conversation, with an optional note |
| Pin | Place the message in the bar at the top of the conversation so everyone sees it |
| Bookmark | Save it to your own "Saved Messages" |
| Copy | Copy the message text or code snippet |
| Edit and delete | Your own messages only |
Replies are threaded: clicking "Replies" opens a side panel, and that sub-conversation stays right there.
Finding Something You've Lost
| Where | What it finds |
|---|---|
| Search at the top of the list | Conversation names, messages, and people |
| Search within this conversation | Only messages from that same conversation |
| Pinned messages | What's been flagged as important in this conversation |
| Saved messages | What you've bookmarked yourself |
| Mentions of me | Every place someone has called you with @ |
| Conversation info panel | That conversation's "Files," "Documents," and "Tasks" tabs |
Mentions and Notifications
The "Mentions & Notifications" inbox has three columns: "Tasks & Documents," "Mentions & Replies," and "System & Membership." Every notification has an Open button, and can be marked as handled.
Notifications can be muted for each conversation individually — messages still come in, but you get no sound or badge for them. The message sound also has its own on/off switch.
Managing a Channel or Group
Whoever creates a channel or group is its owner. The owner and admins can:
- add or remove members,
- grant or revoke a member's admin role,
- change the name, topic, and read-only setting,
- archive the channel (it disappears from the list, but its messages stay and "Unarchive" brings it back),
- transfer ownership to another member.
Any member can also leave the conversation on their own.
Deleting a conversation is different from archiving it. Archiving is reversible; deleting is not.
Sample Workflows
Sending an invoice to a colleague and getting it confirmed
Open a direct conversation with your colleague → Attach → "Document" → find and select the invoice → send. Your colleague clicks "View Document" on the card, and that same invoice opens for them.
Turning a verbal request into a logged task
On the request message, click "Convert to Task" → fill in the project, assignee, and due date → create it. From then on, that task is tracked in the "Task Inbox," and its card in the conversation shows the work's status.
Creating an announcements channel
New chat → Channel → name and topic → add members → turn on "Read-only" in the channel settings. Now only admins can post announcements.
FAQ
Messages arrive late, or the unread badge doesn't update.
Messenger's live connection has dropped. It usually reconnects on its own; if it doesn't, refresh the page once. If it keeps happening, the organization's network or proxy is likely blocking the live connection, and it should be checked with the system administrator.
I mentioned my colleague with @ but they weren't in the list.
The mention list only shows members of that same conversation. Add them as a member first.
I referenced a task with # but nothing came up.
Task references are pulled from the projects you're a member of. If you're not a member of any project, the list is empty.
A file that was sent doesn't open.
Either the file has been deleted, or you don't have permission to view it. In that case, the file card itself says it's unavailable.
I archived a channel and now I can't find it.
From the filter button at the top of the list, open "Archived Conversations" and click "Unarchive."
Why can't I edit or delete my colleague's message?
Edit and delete only work on your own messages. Even a channel admin can't edit someone else's message.
